Self Identity

Collection of Sketches, Self-portrait, Sketch, Installation, Nov 2021

Acrylic on Train Tickets, Self-portrait, Sketch,  48x50 inches, Nov 2021

'Self Identity' is the continued exploration and expression of my identity shown through the whole collection of all 30 sketched self-portraits. These untitled works are all shown together as a sequence that has broke free from the frame as its expands and consumes a shared collective space that each piece inhabits.

The work is also contained within a show reel (containing all 30+ self portraits in a continuous loop) played through a CRTV upon a single plinth that comes away from the wall space.

'Self Identity' consists of a collection of various sketched self portraits that span different mediums and dimensions. When viewing the piece you are presented with a 6ft wall of newspaper pages; torn and overlapping with occasional magazine entries. These newspaper pages present a backdrop for the various pieces: 30 medium based sketches on A4 coloured card scattered in an ascending motion to the right, also overlapping and collated together quite complimentary. The piece is centred by an A3 Collage on canvas. The Collage has a similar self-portrait that is drawn with vibrant acrylic and charcoal, the collage relates to both the space and neighbouring sketches with the use of torn newspaper and coloured paper. In front of this wall is a single plinth also covered with several sketches. Upon this plinth is a CRTV playing a show reel of each separately within 15second intervals, this feedback is played on a continuous loop.  To the right of this collection is a separate piece reflection the opposing piece in medium. This piece is an Acrylic Sketch on conjoined train tickets. Each ticket represents a journey, a journey physically taken by the artist.

The work invites the audience to view the piece up close and from a far. The Centred canvas can be lost at first glance as it is camouflaged and blends in with its surroundings. This is intentional, The use of the same medium creates no break from the space. The two are connected via medium and physicality, this is symbolic as I have used the Reading Chronical (the towns local Newspaper) and included myself within my home towns local news.
